The Selective Service System is the agency of the U.S. Government that is
responsible for providing manpower for service in the Armed Forces during a crisis that requires reinstatement of the draft by the President and Congress.  To maintain America's readiness for that possibility, Federal law requires all men to register with Selective Service within 30 days of their18th birthdays.  The registration requirement applies to all male U.S citizens regardless of where they live; and to permanent resident male non-citizens in the U.S.  Congress has conditioned certain benefits and programs on a man satisfying the registration requirement.  For example, registration with Selective Service is a prerequisite for a man to get Federal student loans and grants, most Federal employment, training opportunities under the Workforce Reinvestment Act, and U.S. citizenship (for men who are non-citizens).  There is no draft currently.  It would take an act of Congress to reinstate a draft.  More information can obtained from the Agency's web site: Selective Service System or by calling 1-888-655-1825 during business hours.  Questions not answered on the Web site may be addressed to the following e-mail address:
